Medical cannabis has been approved by the federal government. The process of approval and accessing cannabis however is very complicated and it is not going to suddenly become common. The main indications will be for pain, though a number of other indications may be possible. For people thinking of accessing cannabis for psychiatric problems such as depression, PTSD insomnia or anxiety approval is for the moment still not possible.

Codeine products have undergone scheduling changes by the TGA. As of the first of February  2018 all codeine products will require a doctors prescription. The decision has been made due to ongoing over the long term risk of dependence and tolerance, and the lack of efficacy data for codeine products.
